One of my strengths has always been making big ideas manageable. Throughout a long corporate career, I was constantly given new initiatives to lead. For example, when Xerox was piloting special empowerments in a limited number of Ohio sales offices, my team was assigned their administrative support. Why? Because success of the initiative required a leader who could take an exciting concept and make it manageable. Throughout a 20 year period, I was repeatedly chosen for large initiatives that required a leader who could take a big idea and make it work.
So quite literally for decades, I have known that strategic implementation is one of my key strengths. In my own business, I frequently help my clients break an idea down into manageable pieces so that they can implement it successfully. I’m skilled at assessing what is immediately feasible and what is not… and I know (for most people) excitement grows from having a series of successes that build into a larger one. Yet one of the stumbling blocks in my own business has been that I can get caught in a cycle of big ideas that I struggle to implement! Ironic, eh?
I recently spent 3 days with my business coach, Laura West, and four other amazing women at a Mastermind business retreat in Virginia Beach. One key element of the retreat was one-on-one coaching with Laura about the next phase of my business with the rest of the group observing. In our session, I focused on a new element of my offerings – social branding and career management using LinkedIn as the tool. As we completed, Laura asked, “Are you inspired?” and I replied, “It sounds manageable.” In the pause that followed came the “aha” moment. After a moment of internal dismay at my initial response, I continued and said, “And manageable IS exciting because it’s not overwhelming… and it’s exciting to know that I can get this accomplished.”
Where are you stopping yourself from succeeding because you are making the next step too big and too overwhelming? Do you hesitate in implementing an organizational change because if feels overpowering with everything you already have to do? Are projects stalling because they seem too big to tackle? Are you delaying taking steps towards a career change, knowing you need to do something but hesitating because it just seems too darn intimidating?
Learn from my experience – with others and myself – that the first step is to break whatever you are delaying into manageable pieces. By reducing the scope of what’s before you into logical and reasonably sized components, you can start to create excitement from your forward momentum. And that energy will build upon itself, allowing you to create the success you desire. My guess is that you know this… yet just like me, you can find yourself forgetting it in the process of dealing with all that is already on your plate and assessing all that you would like to be doing.
